Service & Outreach

Using our hands to offer our hearts.

At St. James UCC, there are several mission projects that are particularly near and dear to our hearts.  There are populations we seek to serve and support and issues we seek to solve by being active participants in the work that is needed.

It is great to talk about the needs of the world and it's great to offer funds to those who already know how to heal the wounds and need all around us; however, as followers of Jesus, it is most important for us to help do the work of serving others and reaching out to the world. Currently we work with several organizations, both national and international, to address issues of hunger, homelessness and poverty, including the Southtowns Food Pantry, Family Promise Network, Heifer International, Help One Help All (in Haiti) and Habitat for Humanity.  We also participate in special local projects like providing backpacks and school supplies for the children at Buffalo Peace House, purchasing Holiday Gifts for families in need through the Hamburg School District, the CROP Walk which supports organizations ease hunger around the world, and the Mitten Tree project, which helps local families in need stay warm.

Offering Support to the Community of Hamburg

St James UCC has been an active and important part of the Hamburg and Village of Hamburg Community. St. James UCC contributes regularly to the main street beautification project in the Village of Hamburg, helping to keep our community look friendly and welcoming.  And    St. James UCC participates in village sponsored festivals such as Burgerfest and Flavor of Hamburg, offering smiles, hospitality, children’s activities and free refreshements.  During the November storm of 2014, St. James UCC donated numerous jars of handmade soup to feed police and rescue forces or those whom they found in need or stuck in their homes without food.

St. James UCC, under the leadership of Rev. Roger Horton, helped establish and support the Hamburg Counseling Center back in 1972.  In order to fill a need for affordable childcare for working families, St. James UCC established TLC Daycare, which remains an important part of the church and continues to offer affordable quality childcare.

Supporting the work of outreach organizations

Through the generosity of our congregation with donations and bequests, St. James UCC is able to offer funding to numerous organizations who are already effectively filling a need in the community, nation or world.  These organizations and special projects are best equipped and specifically trained to offer certain outreach and relief work.  We participate in their outreach by providing financial support to fund the work they do.  Currently, St. James UCC contributes funding through annual grants of $500-$200+ to:

  • Heifer International

  • Help One Help All (A small mission organization in Haiti)

  • Hamburg Central School Thanksgiving Meals

  • Samaritans Counseling Center

  • Paradise House of Buffalo

  • Church World Service

  • Buffalo Peace House

  • International Institute of Buffalo

  • Journey’s End Refugee Services (Buffalo)

  • Help Honduras (A Ministry of the New York Conference)

  • Dunkirk Camp & Conference Center

  • Senior Wishes

  • Plymouth Crossroads

Supporting the Ministries of the United Church of Christ

St. James UCC is proud to be a 5 for 5 church in the United Church of Christ.  This means that we contribute to all five of the UCC mission funds that support the work and special projects sponsored by the denomination–Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM), One Great Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, Strengthen the Church and the Christmas Fund.  These funds are supported through member pledges and 4 special offerings taken throughout the year.
