"Do You Love Me?"

A Vignette

Charley: In a moment we are going to present a short vignette. But first, bear with me while we set the stage. Visualize this area as the town park in Anywhere, USA. (Indicate area in the front of the church in which the skit will be presented.) And here is a park bench. (Gesture to stagehands bringing out three chairs.)

Stagehands bring on three chairs and arrange them side by side to simulate a park bench then depart from stage.

Woman: (Enters and sits in the center seat with a book, magazine, knitting etc.)

Charley: (Wanders down from the pulpit and sits in one of the end seats. He looks at her. She looks at him and quickly she turns away. Again she looks at him but this time she does not look away. After a moment he speaks.) Do you love me?

Woman: (Shrugging her shoulders with a "Humph" she moves to the opposite end seat.)

Charley: (Moving to the center seat, he looks at her again. When she looks at him, he speaks again.) Do you love me?

Woman: (Standing, she puts her nose in the air and walks off.) Charley: (Stands and meanders off in the opposite direction)

Man: (Carrying a newspaper, man enters from same side that Woman left. Sits in center seat. Opens newspaper.)

Charley: (Wanders in and sits on end seat. He looks at the man and when the man peeks over the newspaper Charley speaks.) Do you love me?

Man: You've got to be kidding! (Disappears behind newspaper again.)

Charley: (Continues to look at the man. When the man lowers the newspaper to his lap, Charley continues to stare. After a moment he says …) Do you love me?

Man: (In a sarcastic tone.) Hey buddy, what's your problem? Just what are you looking for?

Charley: (After a slight pause.) A Christian.
